Bixad, St. Peter and Paul Ortodox monastery"The Greek monk Isaiah, who died in 1701, began construction of the monastery in 1699 on a nicely situated hill near the village. The first monastery, made of wood, and the church were not completed at the time of the monk’s death, but were finished soon after. The iconostasis of the first wood church attracted many pilgrims in the area. Construction of the new stone church may have begun in 1765. The Baroque church was oriented towards east, and had towers on the western façade. According to the date above the entrance portal to the church, the building was completed in 1771. Closed in 1948 the church was renovated by the Orthodox Church in 1988-1989, and it was at this time that the present-day iconostasis and other interior decoration were painted." |
