Medieval Ecclesiastical Architecture in Szatmár

The 400-page, richly illustrated volume titled "Medieval Ecclesiastical Architecture in Szatmár" serves the comprehensive description of theSzatmár section of the 'Route of Medieval Churches'. The book was created by an international group of researchers consisting of illustrious and acknowledged professionals. The volume was published in limited number of copies, but due to the high interest a second print was issued with support of the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County Regional Developmentand Environmental Management Agency with the aim of familiarizing non-professional and professional audience who are interested inthe region and topic with this unique heritage within the framework of nationwide distribution. The book provides the most detailed set of information about medieval ecclesiastical architecture inthe historic Szatmár. The volume was granted with the award „Opus Mirabile” by the Committee on Art History of Section of Philosophy and Historical Sciences of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences at the end of 2012.

The volume is available only in Hungarian and Romanian languages.

Medieval Churches from the Tisza to the Carpathians

After the publication of the study volume titled Medieval Ecclesiastical Architecture in Szatmárin 2011, we had the opportunity of continuation. The theme of present book follows the territorial expansion of the Church Route therefore the churches discussed can be found in the northern part of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county and Transcarpathia. The book displays the results of the scientific preparation works preceding touristic projects. The volume is based on previously published results to a great extent. The book describes Transcarpathian churches in more detail, the scientific description of which has been implemented only in limited number of publications. The book emphasizes the description of the newest results, the revealing of the wall paintings in Huszt (Хуст), Visk (Вишковj ),Palágykomoróc (ПаладьКомарівці), Baktalórántháza and the researches of buildings in Beregszász (Берегове)are of national importance. The scientific publication has a significant role in drawing the attention of professionals and that of the public to this stock of historic monuments representing unequalled value. In the framework of the second phase the research of the walls of numerous Transcarpathian churches and the revealing of their frescos could be implemented. The scientific results of the programme include the implementation of wall researches in Palágykomoróc and Visk and the revealing of wall paintings in the churches.

Art and Religion in the Upper Tisza Region

Present publication is a sort of closing of the series, in which the temples of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg and Hajdú-Bihar counties are represented. The introductory essay describes the details of the programme’s third phase. The volume deals with the period of the region’s art that can be connected to Reformation and on the other hand it presents both previously implemented and renovations and building researches connected to the present project. The historic introduction is followed by comprehensive essays about the gothic architecture of the region, Protestant wall paintings, the wooden ceiling in Milota, the treasures of the Museum of the Calvinist College of Debrecen, the history of construction of the Calvinist church in Berekböszörmény, and the outstanding monument of the region, the already non-existing St. Andrew Church in Debrecen. We present the special sculptural decoration of the Calvinist church in Tiszabezdéd, the dendrochronologic examination of the roof truss of the St. George church in Nyírbátor is of great significance as its results can help determining the date of the temple’s construction. The results of new researches in connection with numerous Greek-Catholic churches are presented. Archaeological excavations unfolded the remains of the churches in Biri and Sárköz (Livada). Connected to the current phase of the project church researches were implemented in Kölcse, Vámosoroszi, Gacsály, Bere (Berea), Csomaköz (Ciumești)and Krasznacégény (Teghea), which were followed by renovations the results of which are discussed by the book in details. The essays on the Calvinist church of Vetés and the Roman Catholic church of Zajtaare included in this section. The process of two previously implemented, almost legendary renovations is described by the designer architect in connection with Szamosújlak and Nagyszekeres.  The volume is closed by bibliography and an English summary.

The first two books focused on medieval church architecture and wall painting, while the closing volume illustrates the historical and artistic aspects of the region’s role in the development and spreading of Reformation.
